★AIDS/HIV
In Botswana, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS is a concern, but it is believed that there is no risk of infection through medical procedures. However, caution is needed to prevent transmission through sexual contact, although there is no risk of infection through normal contact.
★Malaria
In northern Botswana, there is a rare possibility of being bitten by mosquitoes carrying the malaria parasite. According to the 2022 World Malaria Report, there were 446 reported cases of infection in Botswana. However, compared to the data from Angola, where there were 7.8 million cases, the risk of infection is considerably lower. Nevertheless, when traveling to northern Botswana or areas such as Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe/Zambia, thorough insect repellent measures are strongly recommended. Taking malaria prophylaxis is also effective, but please consult your doctor as some types may have side effects.
★Rabies
There is a possibility of encountering stray dogs or wild dogs in urban areas. Since it is possible to contract rabies simply by coming into contact with the saliva of animals infected with rabies, including wild animals, it is recommended to avoid approaching or touching them indiscriminately. If you are bitten by an animal, immediate medical treatment is necessary.
